5 Reasons Why Dogs Make Great Reading Partners For Children

Studies Track Improvements in Grade School Language Studies

It turns out dogs are not only good for our health; finding missing people; and helping disabled people live independent lives – they’re good for kids’ report cards, too!

Canines have been found to improve the immune system and reduce blood pressure, among other health benefits. They help rescuers and law officers, blind people and those with limited use of their hands and arms. Now we have another reason to celebrate man’s best friend.

“Dogs not only help children learn to read, they help children learn to love reading,” says Michael Amiri, coauthor with his wife, Linda, of the children’s book, Shellie, the Magical dog (www.shelliethemagicaldog.com). “And that’s true of for children with and without learning disabilities.” Read more →

When baby is teething, Momma is seething…unless….

I have graduated!!!  Save the congrats though, they will not be necessary. My boy just started teething. Its so sad to see his face. He wants to be happy, he really does but everytime he remembers the pain he’s fussing and crying and drooling and just losing it.. my poor boy :( .

When it started, I ran to my 24 hour drugstore and got the numbing gum gel. I have to admit, it was funny seeing the look on his face when I applied it and he realized he lost feeling in his mouth. He was happy again. I put some in my mouth too so I knew how he felt.. my conclusion? Numb. We survived the next 4 hours, but at one of our bi-hourly (I just made that word up) feedings last night, I researched the active ingredient in this numbing gel. It is called benzocaine and  guess what? After reading the FDA’s warning, it went IN THE TRASH… Here is what you should know; Read more →

Diapers, Diapers and more Diapers

Ever ask, ‘Where is all my money going?’ You should be asking the genie… the diaper genie that is. That is where its going. The best money saving option for diapering our little loves is cloth of course. It is 1/3 of the cost of disposable diapers and so much better for the environment. For those of us that prefer the disposables, there are cheaper options. I have researched many stores and sites. Babies ‘r’ Us is great when they have a sale, but keeping up with their sales and coupons is a full time job. Its easy when all you are doing is expecting your baby, but when baby is here, time is at a premium. Go to this site www.diapers.com I love this site! I can order diapers while I am holding my baby, in bulk which is way less expensive. They have partnered with four other sites that have house products, groceries, pet products and also toys. I almost always buy a little extra something for my boy. You can have it shipped together which is why you almost never pay for shipping. if you spend more than $50, and its there on your doorstep in 2 days… aaaah.. convenience.. Gotta go change another diaper bye Mommas !!!

Why wing it, when you can Sling it?

If you told me today that I had to throw away all my baby gear and only keep one item, my answer would come instantly. I would keep my Balboa Baby Adjustable sling. It’s recommended by my favorite parenting expert Doctor, Dr. Sears. This sling has, from day one been amazing, Its comfortable on my shoulder, as well as sturdy and soft for baby’s safety and comfort. What I also love is that its grown with my baby. He is now 15 weeks and he peeks his head right out of it as we walk the dogs, walk on Hollywood beach, do housework (a.k.a picking up my husbands socks off the floor) At my sons age now, this sling is truly hands free. I DO NOT leave home without it. Its rouging around the edges make it absolutely perfect for nursing in public as well as Publix (SoFla’s grocery market)… I have done it. If you don’t have this sling, Momma get one!! I have the black one but they come in adorable fabric patterns also.

Cuddleuppets

One of the many great giveaways from SheCon 2012 was the Cuddleuppet – blanket meets puppet. The toys are made by Jay at Play, makers of the popular Happy Nappers and Pillow Pets. As the mother of a rambunctious, yet cuddly seven-month-old, this was one of my favorite products from the event. My son won’t go anywhere without a blankie to snuggle with when he gets tired, and he loves nuzzling up to stuffed animals at naptime and bedtime. The Cuddleuppet is the perfect combination of both, and it made the Disney rounds with us for several days. Read more →
